Audition can restore audio, and RX can record and edit individual files. Adobe Audition is a workstation first

Adobe calls Adobe Audition a professional audio workstation with multitrack, waveform and spectral displays. It records, edits, mixes and restores audio. That breadth matters if you need to capture a voiceover, assemble many tracks, automate a mix, route buses and export the finished program in one application.

The current Multitrack Editor documentation describes a nondestructive real-time environment: session files reference source paths and mix parameters rather than rewriting every source. Track count is limited by storage and processing resources, not by a small fixed product cap.

Adobe documents up to 16 effects per clip, track and bus, adjustable during playback. RX does not provide that multitrack session architecture; its value is the repair you can perform before returning a clip to the mix.

iZotope RX is a repair ecosystem first

The RX 12 edition comparison lists the Audio Editor, Spectral Repair, Batch Processor, Mouth De-click and De-plosive in Standard and Advanced. Advanced adds tools such as Scene Rebalance and Trim Silence; the advertised 50+ tool count belongs to Advanced. Both RX and Audition run on Windows and macOS, but check each vendor's current system and host requirements against your exact machine before purchase.

RX separates problems into purpose-built modules: De-click, De-clip, De-hum, De-crackle, Mouth De-click, De-plosive, Spectral De-noise, Spectral Repair, Dialogue Isolate, Music Rebalance and more. That does not guarantee a better result on every file, but it gives an editor more defect-specific routes than one generic noise-reduction panel.

Noise reduction: both work, but the control model differs

Audition's official Noise Reduction and Restoration reference includes learned Noise Reduction, Adaptive Noise Reduction, Sound Remover, DeHummer and Automatic Click Remover. Sound Remover can learn an unwanted sound model from a selected example; Audition exposes detailed FFT and reduction behavior.

Learned Noise Reduction is an offline Waveform process; Adaptive Noise Reduction can run in a multitrack rack. For a noise print or Sound Remover model, select unwanted sound without the wanted voice. These are different approaches, so compare the appropriate native tool before concluding that Audition cannot handle the source.

RX splits noise into more task-specific choices: Voice De-noise, Spectral De-noise, De-hum, Dialogue Isolate, Guitar De-noise and selection-based repair. That depth helps when “noise” is actually a mixture of room, traffic, hum and competing sound, but it also demands correct diagnosis.

For a stable fan or ordinary voiceover bed, either tool may be enough. For changing location dialogue, severe reverb/noise interaction or a mixed scene, test RX's specialized modules. The RX background-noise decision tree shows why one denoiser is not a universal answer.

Spectral editing: Audition is capable, RX goes deeper into repair

Audition's Spectral Frequency Display supports marquee, lasso and paintbrush selections. Its selection guide recommends Spot Healing Brush for small isolated artifacts and limits Auto Heal selections to four seconds or less.

RX also provides time-frequency selection, then adds Spectral Repair modes designed to attenuate, replace or reconstruct material from surrounding context. That gives difficult local repairs more explicit strategies than a single healing action.

For a short beep or click, Audition may finish the job without another purchase. For dialogue under a transient, a gap, repeating contamination or a defect that needs several reconstruction candidates, RX's Spectral Repair workflow is the deeper toolbox.

Clicks and clipping: honest overlap

Adobe Diagnostics includes DeClicker and DeClipper. The current Diagnostics documentation lets editors scan, inspect and selectively repair detected items. Automatic Click Remover can also run in the Effects Rack and apply repeated passes.

RX offers De-click algorithms for different impulse types, De-crackle for dense fine texture, Mouth De-click for speech and De-clip for flattened peaks. These are separate repair routes to compare on your source; none guarantees recovery of information that was never recorded.

Dialogue, voiceover and podcasts

Audition is the stronger all-in-one choice for recording a narrator, cutting takes, assembling music, running a multitrack effects chain and exporting the program. Its nondestructive session lets clip and track processing remain adjustable.

RX becomes valuable when the captured voice is already compromised: mouth noise, plosives, competing ambience, reverb, hum, clipping or spectral events. Standard includes many core dialogue tools; Advanced is aimed at more demanding post workflows.

For a simpler native starting point, Audition's Essential Sound panel groups dialogue loudness and repair controls, with the effects reflected in the clip rack. An RX module available in the Editor does not automatically become a real-time rack effect.

Recording and multitrack mixing

Audition wins this category because it is built for it. The Multitrack Editor records and mixes layered projects, supplies clip/track/bus effects, routing, automation and mixdown. It can remain the center of a podcast, video soundtrack or music-production workflow.

RX Audio Editor can record into a new audio file, edit it and export a repaired version. It also provides module chains and batch processing. It does not replace Audition's arrangement of independently recorded tracks, buses, sends and mix automation. A narrator who only needs single-file recording and repair may therefore need less than a full DAW.

If you already own a DAW you like, RX may be the more valuable addition. If you own neither and need to record and assemble a show, Audition provides the broader starting system.

Destructive and nondestructive work

Audition's Multitrack effects are nondestructive, but its Waveform Apply operation commits processing to the open audio data. Saving is a separate decision: Adobe's Save and Save As instructions distinguish updating the current file from writing another filename. Saving a new session alone does not make an independent copy of its referenced audio.

RX Render similarly commits a module's processing to the open file or selection. History and Compare help audition alternatives, while an RX document (.rxdoc) can retain the original and edit history for reopening in RX. Export a separate WAV or other supported audio format for use elsewhere. In both applications, keep an independent original and work on a versioned copy; do not rely on Undo after overwriting source media.

Do not choose a product because one marketing page says “non-destructive.” Choose the working mode that preserves reversibility for the specific repair, session and delivery.

Pricing and ownership cost

On September 5, 2026, Adobe's US product page listed Audition at $22.99 per month, annual billed monthly. That is $275.88 for twelve payments before tax at the stated rate. The RX list prices above are one-time purchases of those editions; do not assume that future major upgrades are included.

The advertised Adobe plan has an annual commitment. Its subscription and cancellation terms describe charges for early cancellation after the refund window, with regional differences. Check the terms offered at checkout rather than treating the monthly payment as a cancel-anytime monthly contract.

Audition's subscription is cheaper at the start and includes the full workstation while payments continue under the plan terms. RX Standard costs more upfront but targets a different need. Advanced is difficult to justify unless its exclusive post tools solve paid work that Standard cannot.

Do not compare $22.99 with $399 as though the time periods match. Estimate how long you will use Audition, which Adobe plan you actually need, whether you already subscribe to Creative Cloud and which RX edition contains the required module. Recheck checkout pricing in your region.

The trials also differ. Adobe offers a seven-day full-app trial that starts at checkout and converts to a paid membership unless cancelled. The RX 12 trial lasts ten days from first opening the Editor or an RX plug-in, but iZotope's demo policy disables saving and exporting in the standalone application. Compare RX previews at matched listening level; do not plan a client delivery around exporting from that trial.

Using Adobe Audition and RX together

iZotope documents RX Connect in Audition through VST3 for RX Standard and Advanced. Work on an independent audio copy in Waveform view, select the intended range, then load RX 12 Connect from Effects > VST3 > Restoration > iZotope. Use the repair route and click Apply to send. In RX, audition and Render the chosen module processing before Send Back. Back in Audition, reload Connect from Effects and click Apply to commit the return. Listen in context, then save the repaired copy.

The official Audition Connect instructions explicitly exclude AU for this round trip. RX's current Connect manual also distinguishes Reference, which cannot send back, from Repair. The Waiting for Connect message after Send Back is the point to reload Connect and Apply in Audition, not proof that the repair has already reached the audio.

Choose iZotope RX 12 if you already have a DAW and the missing capability is difficult dialogue repair, specialized noise treatment, spectral reconstruction or batch repair. For isolated narration, also consider whether RX's single-file recorder and Editor already cover your needs.

Use both when your projects need Audition's multitrack session and RX repairs that demonstrably improve your source. Test the complete licensed round trip before a deadline, including the returned clip in its mix. More installed software alone does not justify the extra cost.

What neither purchase can fix automatically

No editor can reconstruct a performance with certainty after severe overload, missing samples, destructive codec damage or a microphone that never captured the wanted source. Both products can make a compromised recording more usable, but more processing is not the same as more recovered truth. Keep the untreated file and stop when additional reduction removes articulation, ambience or transient shape.

Capture remains the cheapest repair. Set gain with headroom, monitor the microphone and cable, record isolated tracks when possible and keep an uncompressed original. When a retake exists, compare it with restoration time and artifact risk. For irreplaceable material, test several restrained candidates and ask the producer which tradeoff serves the story; do not let a cleaner spectrogram overrule the sound.
