RX Connect has four handoffs: the host sends a selected clip, RX receives and edits it, RX sends the result back, and the host applies or renders that result. Locate the failed stage before changing the installation. Audio that reached RX but cannot be heard needs a different investigation from audio that never left the DAW.
Start with a short working clip backed by an independent copy of the source audio. Does Connect not appear? Does Send do nothing? Does the clip reach RX but stay silent? Does Send Back leave RX waiting, or does the host receive the return without applying it? The RX Editor, plug-in and Connect comparison helps if the processing route itself is uncertain.
First identify where the round trip breaks
| Symptom | Checkpoint | First safe test |
|---|---|---|
| RX Connect is missing | Edition, host route, format or scan | Verify the route, then scan the required format |
| Send does nothing | Audio selection, transfer mode and host action | Send one short selected clip in Repair mode |
| Clip arrives but RX is silent | Playback, output routing or driver access | Check meters and output; use RX Monitor if needed |
| Return sounds unchanged | RX edit not rendered or host commit incomplete | Render the RX module, Send Back, then commit in the host |
| “Waiting for Connect” remains | Pending host return | Follow the host-specific return procedure below |
| Wrong clips, length or channels return | Selection, handles, file mode or channel layout | Test one clip with explicit boundaries and protected source |
| The same transfer error loops | Session state, after basic checks | Preserve all work; investigate Session Data only for the repeatable loop |
The RX 12 Connect manual documents the host procedures. The older Connect host FAQ remains useful for distinguishing transfer routes, but its historical version list is not an RX 12 compatibility certificate.
Nine steps to troubleshoot RX Connect
- Protect the source. Keep an independent copy of the source audio and save needed work from every RX tab. A duplicate clip or playlist can still reference the same disk file.
- Name the failed stage. Separate plug-in discovery, Send, RX playback, RX processing, Send Back and final host commit.
- Verify the host route. Check the RX 12 Connect procedure and current release notes for the host version. Use the appropriate external-editor or ARA route where applicable.
- Verify edition and format. Use RX Standard or Advanced. Pro Tools uses AudioSuite; Audition and the documented Cubase/Nuendo workflow use VST3.
- Run a minimal repair send. Select one short audio clip, choose Repair and complete the host’s Send or Apply action. In Steinberg Direct Offline Processing, turn Auto Apply off first.
- Test playback and render the edit. If the clip arrives silently, check playback and output routing. In RX, verify the intended tab, channels and range; audition the repair, disable any removed-signal monitor, then Render the module.
- Complete the return. Click Send Back, then commit through the host-specific Render or Apply procedure. In Pro Tools, check Playlist reference, Use in Playlist and a nondestructive file mode.
- Verify the result. Compare the returned clip with the protected original for identity, repair, boundaries, sync and channels. In Steinberg hosts, protect a recoverable source before approving permanent processing.
- Recover only the failed branch. Preserve all needed RX work before restarting a broken transfer. Consider Session Data recovery only for a reproducible loop; a missing plug-in does not require clearing editing state.
Keep the test small until the complete return works reliably. Start with a familiar mono or stereo clip, then test a representative edit with the channel layout and boundaries used in the real session.
Check whether your host should use RX Connect
The RX 12 manual provides Connect procedures for Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Cubase and Nuendo. The RX 12.0 release notes list Pro Tools 2025, Audition 2026, Cubase 15 and Nuendo 15 among supported hosts. Check those notes for your installed release; a generic plug-in host list does not mean every RX integration works in every listed application.
The older FAQ also names Pro Tools 10+ and Media Composer. Do not treat that as confirmation that RX 12 supports every historical combination. Logic and Premiere have different integration choices: follow the RX with Logic Pro guide for external editing or supported ARA, and the RX with Premiere Pro workflow for plug-in or external-file processing.
RX 12 Standard and Advanced include Connect; Elements does not. Verify the current RX edition comparison before rescanning. A scan cannot add a component that the installed edition does not contain.
RX Connect is missing from the plug-in menu
Confirm the required format before scanning every plug-in folder. Pro Tools uses the AudioSuite version. iZotope's Adobe Audition instructions specify VST3 and say the AU version will not function in that host. The same page routes a missing instance through Audition's Audio Plug-in Manager: scan, then make sure RX Connect is enabled.
For Cubase and Nuendo, iZotope also specifies the VST3 version inside Direct Offline Processing. Do not load an old VST2 copy because its name looks familiar. Check that the installed RX build and host are supported on the operating system, then rescan the exact required format.
If a rescan still finds nothing, check whether the required component and format were installed. Use the installer’s available component options or repair/reinstall the matching RX package. Record the installed RX version, edition, host version, OS and format first; do not begin by deleting every plug-in cache.
Send does nothing or RX opens empty
Make one clear time selection on one audio clip and choose Send for Repair. Reference sends audio for analysis and offers no return path. It also does not automatically launch the Editor: if that was the intended mode, open RX to receive the reference rather than assuming the transfer failed.
The host must also execute its offline action. Pro Tools exposes Send in the AudioSuite window. Audition loads Connect on a selected region in Waveform view and uses Apply. Cubase and Nuendo add RX Connect through Direct Offline Processing and use Apply with Auto Apply turned off.
If RX opens without the expected tab, check the selected audio, targeted track and completed host action. Preserve any edited RX audio before restarting the transfer. In Pro Tools, keep the original Connect window available for the return; Audition deliberately reloads Connect later, as described below.
Send for Reference cannot return audio
Reference is a one-way analysis transfer in the RX 12 manual. It can help inspect a spectrogram or learn from a source without replacing the host media. Repair is the mode to choose when the edited audio must return through Connect.
Save or export any useful reference-tab work before starting a new Repair transfer from the intended source. A new transfer does not automatically inherit the edits from the old tab. Check the resulting file and selection rather than expecting a Send Back control to appear on the reference copy.
Send Back works, but the DAW does not change
First check that the repair was actually applied in RX. Module Preview auditions settings; Render commits the module processing. With Composite View and Instant Process off for the diagnostic test, verify the active tab, channels and time range. Turn off any “output noise/clicks only” monitor before rendering so the result contains the repaired program.
Send Back then transfers that edited audio to the host. In Pro Tools, return to the original Connect AudioSuite window and click Render. For a test that replaces only the selected timeline clips, use Selection Reference: Playlist, Use in Playlist on, and Create Individual Files. The Avid Use in Playlist explanation covers why a render can appear in the Clip List without changing the timeline when that option is off.
Check file mode separately from playlist targeting. Overwrite Files changes the original audio destructively; a backup playlist using that file is not an independent backup. With Clip List reference and Use in Playlist on, Pro Tools can replace every session occurrence of the selected clip. The Pro Tools Connect guide explains these AudioSuite settings and their consequences.
In Audition, Send Back leaves RX at “Waiting for Connect.” Reload RX Connect in the Effects menu; it should say that Apply will commit the changes. Click Apply. In Cubase or Nuendo, return to Direct Offline Processing and press Apply after Send Back.
Keep the pending return associated with its original clip and session. Do not launch an unrelated transfer over it. Follow the host’s documented reload or commit action, inspect the returned audio, then close the completed process. If a fresh instance is needed, preserve the existing RX work first.
RX says “Waiting for Connect”
“Waiting for Connect” can be the documented handoff state, not proof that RX crashed. Audition explicitly shows that message after Send Back and expects the editor to reopen Connect in the host and apply the returned audio.
In Audition, return to the selected audio in Waveform view, reload RX Connect from the Effects menu and look for “Press Apply to commit changes.” Click Apply, then compare with the protected source. In Pro Tools, foreground the existing Connect AudioSuite window and Render with the intended targeting settings.
If the original Connect instance was closed, the selection changed or the host session was reloaded, preserve the edited RX audio before attempting a fresh transfer. Exporting the repaired selection is safer than repeatedly clicking Send Back with no known receiver.
The clip reaches RX, but you hear no audio
Transfer and monitoring are separate. Some hosts or audio systems monopolize the interface driver, so RX receives the waveform but cannot play through the same device. The official RX Monitor guide identifies this especially with Pro Tools HD systems and many Windows drivers or interfaces.
First confirm that RX playback starts and inspect the output meters and selected output device. For monitoring through the host, insert RX Monitor on a routed aux or instrument track; Cubase and Nuendo use an FX Track. In RX Audio preferences choose RX Monitor as Driver Type. The RX 12 Monitor manual describes the plug-in’s change from Disconnected to Connected. Then verify host meters, mute/solo states and the track’s output bus.
RX Monitor provides an Editor playback route through the host; it does not apply a repair or fix a failed Send Back. A received waveform establishes that audio arrived, not that playback routing is correct. If the connection status or meters fail, trace that monitoring path separately from the file transfer.
Cubase and Nuendo: Direct Offline Processing traps
iZotope's current Cubase/Nuendo instructions require a selected clip, Audio → Direct Offline Processing, Auto Apply off, the VST3 RX Connect instance and Apply. After editing, Send Back from RX and press Apply in the Direct Offline Processing window.
If the Apply button is missing because Auto Apply was enabled, the RX 12 manual says to disable Auto Apply and restart with a new Connect instance. Preserve the edited RX audio before abandoning the old return. Once the intended result is back, inspect it before the final permanent-processing step.
A duplicated event can share its underlying clip. In the Nuendo 15 shared-clip procedure, New Version limits processing to the selected event; Continue processes all shared copies. That choice appears when On Processing Shared Clips is set to Open Options Dialog in Editing—Audio preferences. Check the scope before processing, rather than assuming every duplicate is isolated.
iZotope recommends Make Direct Offline Processing Permanent after approving the return; otherwise deleting the Connect entry or resending can revert its changes. However, Steinberg’s permanent-processing documentation says this cannot be undone and empties the process list. Keep an independent source and a recoverable project/audio backup first, then apply it only to the intended selection when further DOP editing is no longer needed.
If the Steinberg return appears to do nothing, verify Auto Apply, the VST3 format and the pending DOP entry before clearing caches. Those workflow conditions are more specific—and safer to test—than a blind reset.
Wrong clip, wrong length or wrong channels return
Reduce the round trip to one clip with explicit boundaries. AudioSuite’s clip-by-clip versus entire-selection processing, output file mode and handle settings affect the result. Check those settings before sending a group; extending a handle cannot create source material that was never recorded.
Before Render, compare the returned tab name, duration, channel count and selection against the source. For multi-mono, interleaved stereo or surround work, verify a single representative clip before sending a group. A successful transfer with the wrong channel interpretation is still a failed round trip.
RX’s file limits also matter: Standard’s Editor supports mono/stereo, Advanced up to ten channels per file tab, and the Editor allows up to 32 open files. Pro Tools Mono Mode can split a stereo selection into separate mono files, so a multi-clip send can consume more tabs than expected. Reduce the selection and preserve wanted handles, then check sync at both boundaries after return.
RX Connect is stuck in a repeating loop
Save needed work from every open RX tab as RX documents or exported audio, and verify those files outside the Session Data folder. Save the host project and its required audio before restarting RX and the host. Retry a single working-copy clip to establish whether the same error is reproducible.
For a persistent session error or Connect loop, iZotope documents clearing RX’s Session Data Folder, including its RX Connect contents. This removes unsaved and in-progress work across RX, not just the current transfer. Use Preferences → Misc → Session Data Folder and its Show in Finder/Explore control to identify the actual configured folder; do not guess an old default path. Preserve a copy of that folder as well as separately saved/exported work before following the vendor’s clearing procedure.
After clearing the official Session Data location, reopen RX and test one disposable clip. Do not immediately send a multi-clip scene. If the minimal round trip still fails, stop deleting state and collect a reproducible support case.
When to reinstall or contact support
Use repair/reinstallation for an installation or component-discovery problem after checking edition, required format and host scan. It is not necessary to clear Session Data first. For a transfer failure, resolve mode, selection, RX render and host commit before changing the installation; for a repeatable session-state loop, use the recovery branch above or contact support before clearing state.
For support, record the RX version and edition, host version, operating system, plug-in format, channel layout, exact selected duration and the last successful step. Include the precise message, whether the problem reproduces with a new one-clip session and whether the audio itself was saved.
Automation adds another possible failure layer. Test a manual round trip before diagnosing the macro. In an April–May 2026 RX 12/Nuendo 15 discussion, a successful single-event report sits alongside a question about multi-clip scene failures. That is a reason to test both scopes, not evidence that every configuration works or fails. Follow the vendor’s Auto Apply procedure rather than copying a forum macro into a production session.
Final RX Connect quality gate
- An independent source-audio backup is recoverable; duplicate playlist references alone are insufficient.
- The installed RX edition, version, host version and transfer route are compatible.
- The host-required Connect format is installed and the correct audio selection is sent in Repair mode.
- The intended RX module repair is rendered with normal program output.
- Monitoring status and routing are checked separately from file transfer.
- Send Back is followed by the host’s commit, including Pro Tools playlist targeting where applicable.
- The returned clip’s identity, boundaries, channels, sync and audible repair match the intended edit.
- Shared-event scope and irreversible Steinberg permanent processing are checked before approval.
- All needed RX work is saved outside Session Data before any session-state recovery.
The RX Workflows hub connects this troubleshooting path to supported DAWs, external editors, plug-in processing and safe round trips.
Frequently asked questions
Why does RX Connect say “Waiting for Connect”?
It can be a normal pending return. Audition expects RX Connect to be reloaded from the Effects menu, followed by Apply. Pro Tools uses the existing Connect AudioSuite window and Render with the intended playlist and file-mode settings.
Why is there no Send Back button?
Reference mode is a one-way analysis transfer and does not automatically launch RX. Preserve useful work, then start a new transfer in Repair mode when a return is required.
Why did Send Back not change my Pro Tools clip?
Render the intended module repair inside RX before Send Back. Then Render in the Connect AudioSuite window. For selected timeline clips, check Playlist reference, Use in Playlist on and a nondestructive file mode; with Use in Playlist off, the processed result can remain only in the Clip List.
Why is RX Connect missing in Logic Pro or Premiere Pro?
The vendor documents other routes for these applications. Logic can use external editing or supported Spectral Editor ARA configurations; Premiere uses supported RX plug-ins or an external-file workflow. A general RX plug-in compatibility listing does not establish Connect support.
Why is RX silent after the clip arrives?
Check RX playback, meters and the selected output device. If the host controls the driver, use a routed RX Monitor aux/FX track and choose RX Monitor as Driver Type in RX. Confirm Connected status and the host’s mute, solo and output routing.
Does RX Connect work in RX 12 Elements?
No. RX 12 Connect is included in Standard and Advanced, not Elements.
Should I clear RX Session Data?
Consider it only for a reproducible session error or Connect loop after preserving every needed RX tab. Verify separately saved documents or exported audio outside the configured Session Data folder and back up that folder. Clearing it deletes unsaved and in-progress RX data; it is not a prerequisite for reinstalling a missing component.
What should I send to iZotope support?
Provide RX edition/version, host version, OS, plug-in format, channel layout, exact failed stage and a minimal one-clip reproduction, plus the full error message.
