Use iZotope RX 12 in Logic Pro in three ways: ordinary Audio Unit inserts for adjustable track processing, Spectral Editor ARA for local spectral repairs, or RX Audio Editor as an external editor for the full restoration toolkit. On Apple silicon, the Logic ARA route requires Rosetta. Ordinary RX AU inserts can run in native Logic.
Before sending audio outside Logic, create an independent audio file. Duplicating a region or track can leave both copies reading the same recording; saving a repair over that recording can change every region that uses it. The file-preservation steps below matter as much as choosing the right RX module.
Choose the right RX–Logic workflow
| Workflow | Best starting use | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary AU insert | Adjustable cleanup during track playback | No freehand spectral selection; latency depends on the processor and mode |
| Spectral Editor AU ARA | Local Attenuate, Replace, Gain, De-click and De-hum | First insert on an audio track; Rosetta on Apple silicon; five processing modes |
| RX Audio Editor | Full editor, detailed selections and additional modules | Requires careful file references and a checked return to Logic |
The RX 12 release notes, checked September 5, 2026, list Logic Pro 12 as a supported host and AU among the 64-bit formats. They list Logic AU ARA support from version 10.7, on Intel or Apple silicon through Rosetta. That is the documented host range, rather than a test of every subsequent Logic point release.
RX 12 Standard and Advanced include the standalone Audio Editor and Spectral Editor. Elements supplies six restoration plug-ins, including Voice De-noise, De-click and Repair Assistant, but no standalone editor. Check the edition comparison before looking for a missing component.
The Editor, plug-ins and Connect comparison covers the broader architecture. Here, the menu paths and ARA restrictions are specific to Logic.
Workflow 1: load normal RX Audio Units
On the channel strip, click Audio FX → Audio Units → iZotope, select the RX effect, then choose the appropriate Mono or Stereo format. That is the ordinary insert route in iZotope's Logic instructions. RX effects belong in an effect slot, not the software-instrument slot.
Use an insert when you want to adjust treatment while the track plays. For Voice De-noise, choose Dialogue optimization for speech and Music for sustained singing, as the current module manual specifies. Learn a manual noise profile from noise alone, then leave Learn before judging the wanted performance. The same noise-learning procedure does not apply to every RX processor.
Do not assume every available mode suits live monitoring. In particular, iZotope recommends offline use for De-hum's Adaptive Dynamic mode. Audition demanding processing on recorded material and check monitoring delay before tracking through it.
Channel formats also matter. Logic supports Mono → Stereo effects that change the downstream channel layout; this is different from Spectral Editor's stereo-file-on-mono-track silence restriction. Apple's plug-in channel-format guide explains the ordinary AU routing.
Workflow 2: set up Spectral Editor ARA
Insert RX Spectral Editor (ARA) first on an audio track. Select the audio clip you want to repair and start playback to load it into the spectrogram. To work on another clip, select that clip and play again. After trimming or changing a region, stop and restart playback with the intended clip selected.
The RX 12 Spectral Editor manual documents its ARA 2.0 setup and five modes: Attenuate, Replace, Gain, De-click and De-hum. This is a limited editing surface inside Logic, not the entire standalone RX application.
Try a narrow selection around a chair squeak, cough or isolated click, then use the appropriate mode's Process button. Listen across both selection boundaries and in the mix. A clean-looking spectrogram does not establish that the wanted audio survived.
Apple silicon requires Rosetta for RX ARA
Apple's Logic ARA compatibility guidance agrees with iZotope's requirement: on Apple silicon, run Logic itself under Rosetta for this ARA workflow. Installing Rosetta while continuing to launch Logic natively is not the same thing.
Save the project and quit Logic. In Finder, select Logic Pro in Applications, choose File → Get Info, and enable Open using Rosetta if offered. Relaunch Logic, then load the ARA component. Apple's Rosetta instructions explain this setting for Universal applications.
This changes how the whole host runs. If you prefer to keep this session in native Logic, use ordinary RX AU effects or the external Audio Editor instead. Check current compatibility before changing macOS or Logic; the September 2026 requirements are not a promise about future systems.
Nine steps for a safe Logic-to-RX repair
- Choose the route. Use an AU insert for adjustable track processing, ARA for its five local repair modes, or the Audio Editor for the full toolkit.
- Protect the source. Save the project and preserve original media. Create an independent audio file before external editing or repairs that must differ between copies; a duplicated region alone is insufficient.
- Prepare the host. For ARA on Apple silicon, save and quit Logic, enable Open using Rosetta in Finder's Get Info window, then relaunch.
- Load the right component. Insert an ordinary RX AU in Audio FX, place Spectral Editor ARA first on an audio track, or configure RX in Logic's File Editor settings.
- Load the intended audio. For ARA, select the clip and start playback. For external editing, verify the independent file reference before opening that audio in RX.
- Target the defect. In ARA or the Editor, select the affected area with useful surrounding context. With an ordinary AU, audition a representative passage and adjust the effect.
- Evaluate treatment. In ARA, Process and compare using Undo and Redo before saving. In the Editor, use available Preview and Compare controls, then Render the approved treatment once. Compare ordinary AU processing with bypass.
- Check the return. For external editing, save only the independent working file, close its RX tab and return to Logic; if exporting under a new name, import that new file explicitly. For ARA, audition the processed clip and refresh playback after region edits.
- Approve in context. Check timing, fades, channel layout, sample rate, other regions sharing media and the full mix. Keep the original and a clear rollback version.
Match listening levels when comparing. Keep an unprocessed, independent reference available; a second region pointing to the repaired file cannot serve as an untouched before version.
Spectral Editor limits that matter in real sessions
ARA cannot go on a software-instrument track or bus. Spectral Editor does not support Logic's Selection Based Processing, host presets or automation. Apple Loops, compressed audio, Flex-processed audio and reversed regions require a bounce to ordinary audio before this workflow.
A stereo file on a mono track, or a region whose sample rate differs from the session, can produce silence. Check those conditions before treating a blank or silent instance as an installation failure.
There is also a selection-length boundary: Attenuate in Horizontal or 2D mode, and Replace, do not support selections longer than ten seconds. Spectral Editor automatically switches such selections to Attenuate, Vertical. Recheck the mode after selecting a long passage; split the work into suitable shorter selections when replacement is actually needed.
The ARA Undo history clears when the Logic session is saved. Its separate Reset command reverts all processing to unprocessed audio; it is not a one-step undo. The manual also says Undo affects all non-unique copies of a clip. Bounce to an independent file first when one copy needs a different repair, and keep original media outside this processing history.
Logic comp takes need individual selection
For an unflattened comp, select the individual takes that form it. The top comp region does not appear as the editable target in Spectral Editor. Toggle playback to load the selected take, repair it and listen through the actual comp transition.
Once the performance choice is settled, a bounce can provide a simpler repair target. Preserve the take folder and confirm the bounce contains the intended comp before processing. Do not assume a repair to a different take will change the portion currently audible.
Create an independent file before shared-file edits
For ordinary audio, select the region in the Tracks area and use Edit → Convert → Audio Region to New Audio Files. Choose the destination and a distinct name, retaining the intended sample rate and channel format. Apple's file-copy and conversion instructions also document Audio File → Save Region(s) As in the Project Audio Browser. Menu wording can vary with the number of selected regions.
Check the file reference afterward: the region you intend to repair must use the new file, while the reference version must still use the original. Merely saving an exported copy somewhere does not establish which file the current region reads. Avoid replacing all project references when only one occurrence should change.
For Flex, reversed, loop or compressed material, use File → Bounce → Regions in Place. In Apple's current region-bounce workflow, choose New Track and Source: Mute to retain the source without playing both versions together. Selected Track can replace selected regions; Source: Delete removes them.
Review the bounce options each time. Enable Bypass Effect Plug-ins when you want to repair without printing the track's effects. Decide whether volume/pan automation and effect tails belong in the working audio. Choose Normalize: Off to avoid normalization, but check peaks: Off provides no overload protection. Keep enough surrounding audio for edits and decay, and confirm the resulting file and track are compatible with ARA.
Use the five ARA modes deliberately
Attenuate reduces selected material that differs from its surroundings without fully resynthesizing it. Start conservatively when an intrusion overlaps wanted sound. Replace reconstructs a damaged tonal area from neighboring audio; in this surface it uses Horizontal processing, with Strength and Direction disabled. Neither mode guarantees recovery of missing performance.
Gain raises or lowers the selected time-frequency area. It is useful when reducing an intrusion is enough. De-click addresses impulses: choose the algorithm for the noise and check that wanted attacks remain intact. The full De-click tutorial covers the broader module workflow.
De-hum in Spectral Editor uses Dynamic processing with Adaptive enabled. It is not the standalone module's complete Static/Dynamic interface. Check sustained wanted tones before applying a long pass; the De-hum guide explains the full module's controls and risks.
Workflow 3: configure RX as Logic's external editor
In Logic Pro → Settings → Audio → File Editor, click Choose and select RX Audio Editor. In the Audio Track Editor, use Edit → Open in [external editor]; the default shortcut is Shift-W. These are the current paths in Apple's external-editor guide. Older instructions may call Settings “Preferences.”
Open the independent working audio, confirm its filename, then repair it. In the full Editor, turn Instant Process off before making a selection if you want to inspect the area without processing it immediately. Use the available module Preview and Compare controls, then Render the approved setting. Those full Editor controls should not be confused with ARA's Process button.
For an opened WAV or AIFF, File → Save overwrites that file on disk. Use it for this round trip only after confirming the file is the disposable working copy. The RX saving instructions distinguish Save, Save As, Export and RX Documents. An RX Document preserves editing history but cannot be opened as audio in Logic.
After saving, close the file's RX tab and return to Logic; wait for the waveform to update and audition the result. The RX manual's Logic workflow specifies closing the tab. If the refresh stalls, save your other RX work before quitting RX and checking Logic again. The older vendor support workflow requires quitting the application, so do not assume tab closure resolves every host/version combination.
If you use File → Export under another name instead, import that new WAV or AIFF into Logic at the correct position. Do not expect the existing region to switch files automatically. The RX beginner tutorial explains the Editor's selection, comparison and export workflow.
Why RX Connect is not the normal Logic round trip
iZotope documents Logic in the external-editor section of the RX Connect manual. Use Logic's own external-editor command or Spectral Editor ARA, rather than copying Pro Tools' Send, Send Back and AudioSuite Render steps. A Connect component appearing in a menu does not establish a supported Logic transfer workflow.
If Spectral Editor does not appear
First confirm Standard or Advanced is installed, choose the ARA component, and check the first audio-track insert and Rosetta requirement. After a new AU installation, save your work and restart the Mac if the component remains unavailable.
Then open Logic Pro → Settings → Plug-in Manager. If the component is listed with failed validation, select it and use Reset & Rescan Selection. If it remains absent from the manager, Apple's AU troubleshooting instructions provide Full Audio Unit Reset, followed by closing and reopening Logic to rescan all installed Audio Units. This also resets Audio Units for MainStage; reserve it for the missing-component branch.
For a visible but empty or silent instance, first check selected-clip playback, stop/start refresh, channel format, sample rate and unsupported region processing. The RX plug-in discovery guide covers broader installation and validation problems.
Final Logic–RX quality gate
- The chosen route supplies the required tools in the installed edition.
- Original media is preserved; an independently editable copy has its own file reference.
- ARA is first on an audio track, with Logic running through Rosetta on Apple silicon.
- The intended clip or comp take is loaded; unsupported material was bounced and checked.
- Selection length has not silently changed the ARA processing mode.
- Timing, fades, sample rate and channels survive the return.
- Other regions using the source remain as intended; cleanup is not inadvertently applied twice.
- The repaired passage works at matched listening level in the full mix, with an independent original retained.
The RX Workflows hub connects the Logic procedure to Pro Tools, video editing, batch processing and delivery guides. Keep each host's transfer instructions separate.
Frequently asked questions
Does RX 12 work with Logic Pro 12?
Yes. The RX 12 release notes checked September 5, 2026 list Logic Pro 12 as a supported host and 64-bit AU effects. Check current requirements for your exact system and host version.
Do I need Rosetta to use RX in Logic?
For RX Spectral Editor AU ARA on Apple silicon, Logic itself must run through Rosetta. Ordinary RX AU effects and the Audio Editor can run natively on supported systems.
Where should Spectral Editor sit in the insert chain?
Place it first on an audio track. It cannot be used on a software-instrument track or bus. Select the audio clip and start playback to load it.
Why is Spectral Editor empty or silent?
Select the intended clip and start playback; stop and restart after region edits. Check stereo-file/mono-track mismatches, the region's sample rate and unsupported Flex, reversed, compressed or Apple Loop material.
Can Spectral Editor process a Logic comp?
Select the individual takes that form the comp and toggle playback to load them. The top comp region itself is not the editable spectrogram target. A checked bounce is an alternative after preserving the take folder.
Should I use RX Connect with Logic Pro?
Use Logic's documented external-editor workflow for RX Audio Editor, or Spectral Editor ARA for its local repair tools. iZotope lists Logic in the external-editor section; Pro Tools' Connect transfer steps do not apply.
Does external editing change my original file?
It can: Save overwrites an opened WAV or AIFF, and several Logic regions may read that file. Create and verify an independent audio file before editing. Duplicating a region alone does not protect the underlying recording.
Which RX edition includes Spectral Editor?
RX 12 Standard and Advanced include Spectral Editor and the standalone Audio Editor. Elements supplies six restoration plug-ins and does not include either editor.
