To repair tape wow and flutter in iZotope RX 12, first decide whether you hear slow pitch drift, rapid warble or one constant speed error. Use Wow for slower movement, Flutter for faster modulation, and Center Global Pitch only when you have a trustworthy tuning reference. Work from an untouched transfer, test one representative passage and keep the lightest correction that stabilizes the recording without flattening vibrato.
RX 12 Wow & Flutter addresses speed-related pitch variation. It does not remove clicks or hiss, reconstruct missing audio, repair physical tape damage or fix a failing deck. Start with the best safe transfer and identify which instability is actually in that file.

Listen to exposed piano, strings, organ, sustained guitar or a held vocal. Slow wow sounds like the musical center is leaning in and out of tune. Flutter is quicker and can resemble an unwanted chorus. A constant wrong speed is not modulation at all; it needs a reliable reference and a different decision.
What RX 12 Wow & Flutter actually does
The current RX 12 Wow & Flutter manual describes transparent correction of pitch variation caused by inconsistent medium speed. The module analyzes a time selection, estimates the unwanted contour and applies compensating correction. It can also address a static pitch offset and print the detected contour for diagnosis.
This is an RX Advanced Audio Editor module. The current RX edition comparison lists Wow & Flutter only under Advanced, not Standard or Elements. The manual also says it is unavailable in Batch Processor, Module Chain and Composite View. A tutorial that recommends putting it in a chain, batch or DAW insert is not describing the present RX 12 implementation.
Fix the playback chain before the file
If you still possess the cassette, reel, disc or film source, ask whether the warble belongs to the recording or to the machine used for the new transfer. A worn belt, contaminated tape path, binding reel, poor pinch-roller contact, incorrect speed or off-center disc can print fresh instability into an otherwise recoverable source.
The US National Archives advises using well-maintained, format-appropriate playback equipment and limiting plays of original tape. Its magnetic-media guidance includes routine cleaning of heads and the tape path, but it also warns against playing visibly contaminated or deteriorated media without specialist help. Do not repeatedly run a fragile master through a questionable deck while hoping software will rescue the next pass.
For valuable, sticky, shedding, stretched or mechanically damaged media, stop and use a preservation specialist. NARA's audio digitization guidance explains why obsolete equipment and fragile records make high-quality copying a specialist job. RX should correct instability already embedded in the best safe capture—not excuse a damaging transfer.
Protect the raw transfer
Keep the original capture untouched. Create a working duplicate for restoration and a separate listening copy for delivery. A preservation master and an access file have different jobs: the former retains the high-quality capture; the latter can be compressed or normalized for ordinary use.
Record the source, deck, speed, interface, sample rate, bit depth, channel layout and any mechanical intervention. The IASA magnetic-tape reproduction guidance treats playback stability and gentle tape handling as properties of the transfer system, not post-production decorations. If a second, better-aligned machine produces a stable capture, that recapture is more defensible than an aggressive digital correction.
In RX, use File → Save As… or File → Export… with a different filename for the working audio. Ordinary Save on WAV/AIFF overwrites the source; Export Selection saves only the selected region. Verify that your backup contains the complete recording. An additional File → Save RX Document… checkpoint retains the original audio and edit history, but .rxdoc is an RX document, not a normal DAW or player deliverable.
Digital Azimuth correction adjusts channel gain and delay; it cannot retrieve high frequencies lost during a misaligned transfer. The IASA guidance makes that distinction explicit. If the physical medium is safe to replay, have the transfer alignment corrected before relying on software for the remainder.
Choose a representative test passage
Do not tune the module on the noisiest half-second of the recording. Select a passage long enough to reveal at least several cycles of the instability and rich enough to give the detector sustained pitch evidence. Include an exposed transient and genuine expression—vibrato, tremolo, string ensemble movement or speech inflection—so you can hear whether the correction starts treating performance as damage.
Test the same time range and untreated checkpoint with every candidate. Wow & Flutter has Compare and Render rather than a direct real-time Preview button. Click Compare to calculate a candidate, select it in the Compare Settings window, then use that window’s Preview to audition it. Double-click its list entry to name the mode, rate and Sensitivity. Render applies the chosen settings. The current Compare controls and our Preview, Compare and History workflow explain that distinction. Hear the surrounding phrase from the same starting point; do not accumulate successive candidate renders on already corrected audio.
Use Display Wow or Flutter on a duplicate
Display Wow and Display Flutter are diagnostic renders, not harmless view switches. The manual says they print the detected pitch contour onto the audio file and apply no correction. Run them only on a duplicate or disposable tab, then inspect whether the contour follows the audible wobble.
Before correcting the recording, return to the untouched working copy or undo the diagnostic render, and uncheck Display Wow or Display Flutter. Leaving the checkbox enabled prints another diagnostic instead of applying the repair. Merely unchecking it does not remove a contour already written into the audio. Keep any diagnostic export separately named and out of the restoration master.
A moving line is not proof that every movement should be flattened. Natural vibrato, portamento and ensemble beating also create pitch motion. The display answers “what did the detector follow?”; your ears still decide whether that movement is mechanical error or music.
Choose Wow: Slow, Medium or Fast
RX describes Wow as slower pitch variation, typically 0–5 Hz, and provides these three rate targets. The values describe how often pitch fluctuates each second, not the musical note frequency:
- Slow: 0–0.5 Hz. Test this for gradual drift or a cycle longer than two seconds. Choose a rate from the observed cycle rather than assuming every off-center disc belongs in Slow.
- Medium: 0.5–2 Hz. Test this when the pitch bends several times across a sustained phrase.
- Fast: 2–8 Hz. Use it for quicker wow approaching the boundary with flutter.
These are detector ranges, not quality levels. Fast is not “stronger,” and Slow is not automatically gentler. Compare the modes against the observed cycle. When two settings improve the center, keep the one that leaves attacks, vibrato and room character more believable.
Set Sensitivity without flattening vibrato
Flutter targets quicker pitch variation from 8 to 40 Hz. Sensitivity is also present in Wow mode, as the current RX 12 module interface shows. It controls how aggressively detected pitch variation is corrected; the manual notes that lowering it can protect desirable fluctuation such as vibrato. Choose the appropriate Wow rate or Flutter mode first, then compare a lower Sensitivity before increasing correction.
Begin low and raise it only until the mechanical shimmer settles. Check solo voice, violin, sustained guitar and cymbal decay because these reveal overcorrection quickly. If a singer becomes unnaturally fixed or a string section loses life, the detector is solving more than the transport defect.
Start full-band, then refine the detection band
On a full-band selection, RX automatically chooses a suitable frequency range for analysis. That is the clean first test. If percussion, surface damage or broadband noise prevents stable tracking, make a bandwidth-limited selection around clearer harmonic evidence. RX will then use only that selected frequency band to detect pitch variation.
Do not confuse detection bandwidth with output filtering. The selected band tells the analysis what evidence to follow; it does not turn Wow & Flutter into an EQ. Verify the rendered result across the full spectrum and both channels.
Multiple disconnected selections are not processed as independent islands. RX combines them into one time selection and processes the whole span. If the middle contains a splice, silence or a different transport problem, work in deliberate contiguous regions instead.
Center Global Pitch only with a real reference
Center Global Pitch moves the material toward a specified concert pitch; RX defaults to 440 Hz. That default is not evidence that the source was performed at A=440, recorded at correct speed or intended for modern tuning. Historical recordings, field tapes, variable-speed productions and instruments with unstable tuning may legitimately sit elsewhere.
Leave the option off when your job is only to remove cyclic instability. The current manual says that with Center Global Pitch unchecked, processing preserves the selection’s length and average pitch. Enable it only when the intended concert tuning is established. A documented test tone or transfer speed can help diagnose a speed error, but is not itself the concert-pitch value to type into this control. Do not enter a calibration tone’s frequency as though it were the music’s tuning reference. iZotope’s official RX 8 Wow & Flutter walkthrough gives historical slow/fast musical examples; use the RX 12 manual for current controls.
If a constant speed error requires pitch and duration to change together, evaluate a separate, measured speed correction. In Variable Pitch, disabling Preserve Time uses resampling and changes pitch and duration together; enabling it changes pitch while keeping selection length. This is a different operation from simply centering concert pitch. Record the intended duration and tuning, work on a duplicate, and check synchronization through the whole result.
Step-by-step RX 12 workflow
- Preserve the untouched transfer, make and verify a complete working audio copy, and save an RX Document if editable history is needed.
- If the physical source remains, rule out a faulty playback transfer or unsafe medium before further plays.
- Classify the defect as slow wow, rapid flutter or a constant global offset; establish any intended tuning separately.
- Select a representative contiguous passage with sustained harmonics, exposed transients and musical expression; begin full-band.
- Open Wow & Flutter in RX 12 Advanced Audio Editor, with Composite View off and all intended channels enabled.
- If using Display for diagnosis, use a disposable copy; return to clean audio and uncheck Display before corrective processing.
- Use Compare to calculate candidates from the same untreated state, audition them in Compare Settings, and vary one mode, rate or Sensitivity setting at a time.
- If detection wanders, restrict the analysis to a useful harmonic band and retest; leave Center Global Pitch off unless the intended concert tuning is established.
- Render the approved correction, inspect section joins, and export the complete restoration under a separate name.
- Reopen and listen through the whole export, checking pitch, expression, timing, channels and boundaries; retain the raw transfer and settings record.
Do not change mode, bandwidth and global pitch at once. One-variable comparisons make artifacts traceable and keep the history useful.
Repair wow and flutter in separate passes
A transfer can contain both a slow capstan cycle and a faster shimmer. Treat them as separate questions. First stabilize the dominant slow movement with the matching Wow rate, listen to the rendered copy, then test Flutter on the result. Reverse the order only when the rapid instability prevents the slow contour from being read reliably.
Wow & Flutter cannot run in Module Chain or Batch Processor, so apply these stages separately in the Editor. Each reel, cassette side and splice may need different analysis settings. Where it fits in a restoration chain
Make only the repairs required to give pitch detection reliable evidence. Gross discontinuities or severe clipping may need local attention first. In many music transfers, pitch stabilization comes before heavy broadband denoising because sustained harmonics are valuable to the detector and a moving noise spectrum can make later noise work harder.
After pitch is stable, continue with defect-specific tools: large impulses in De-click, dense low-level damage in De-crackle, remaining hum in De-hum and localized gaps or noises in Spectral Repair. There is no mandatory universal order. A severe click that breaks tracking may need removal first; an aggressive denoise pass that erases harmonics should wait. Save checkpoints and justify each exception by a better audible result.
Settings by symptom, not by medium

“Cassette preset” is too crude. Two cassettes can have different cycle rates, program material and damage. The source medium suggests causes; the audible modulation chooses the RX setting.
When RX cannot lock reliably
Speech without sustained vowels, heavy crowd noise, percussion-only passages, dense chorus, already time-stretched audio and abrupt edits can leave the detector without a stable center. Try a longer contiguous passage, a cleaner frequency band or a neighboring section with the same transport behavior. If the pitch contour remains implausible, do not force a full-file render.
For a gradual pitch drift that the detector cannot follow, a carefully drawn Variable Pitch correction may be worth testing. It still cannot reconstruct a missing section or repair the medium itself. A stretched tape can vary from moment to moment; recapture or specialist restoration may be necessary. Preserve the imperfect raw transfer so later work can start from unprocessed evidence.
RX Wow & Flutter vs Celemony Capstan
Celemony Capstan is a separate application for wow, flutter and continuous speed variation. Its vendor documents mono, stereo, multichannel and multitrack support with varispeed-based correction. Checked September 7, 2026: the demo analyzes the entire file but cannot save or export, and playback stops after seven seconds. It can test critical passages, but cannot establish the quality of a complete exported master. The vendor’s public requirements list older systems; confirm your exact operating system and licensing requirements with Celemony before committing to a paid job.
RX makes sense when Advanced is already the center of a wider restoration job and you need clicks, crackle, hum, spectral repair and pitch stabilization in one editor. Capstan deserves a trial when wow/flutter removal is the entire high-value assignment, RX cannot find a convincing contour or multitrack behavior matters. Compare both from the same untouched transfer; software reputation is not a substitute for the result on this recording.
A July 2024 DVinfo discussion includes both an engineer’s preference for Capstan and a linked comparison favoring RX for some faster flutter. These are historical, source-dependent opinions, not an RX 12 benchmark or a universal winner. Use them as a reason to compare your own problem passage.
Archive-safe export and QA
Keep three clearly named files: raw transfer, restoration master and access copy. The raw transfer stays untouched. The restoration master carries approved repairs at preservation quality. The access copy can be normalized, tagged or compressed for listening.
Keep a backup in a separate location and record a checksum for the raw transfer. NARA recommends backups, descriptive and technical metadata, and checksums for preservation. A checksum helps detect later file changes; it does not prove that a repair sounds correct.
Use File → Export… for the complete restoration under a new name, or Export Selection only when a selected excerpt is the intended delivery. Match the agreed sample rate, bit depth and channels; do not normalize or resample the raw preservation copy. Reopen the exported file outside RX and listen through the entire recording at a normal level, including quiet sections, all section joins and the start/end boundaries. Check:
- pitch center is steadier without becoming unnaturally rigid;
- vibrato, tremolo, glissando and ensemble motion remain musical;
- transients and cymbal decay do not smear or phase;
- stereo image and sync remain stable;
- section boundaries do not jump in pitch;
- global tuning was changed only with a documented reference;
- the raw transfer and capture notes remain available.

What not to do
- Do not repeatedly play fragile or contaminated media on an uncertain machine.
- Do not overwrite the raw transfer.
- Do not treat every pitch movement as mechanical damage.
- Do not enable Center Global Pitch merely because 440 Hz is the default.
- Do not assume Fast Wow is a stronger quality setting.
- Do not use a diagnostic Display render on your only working file.
- Do not combine disconnected selections without checking the material between them.
- Do not promise a batch or Module Chain workflow that RX 12 does not support.
