Repair a tiny audio dropout with RX 12 Interpolate when the damaged selection is under 4,000 samples and clean audio exists on both sides. For a longer gap, open Spectral Repair and choose Replace for steady material, Pattern for repetition, or Partials + Noise for harmonically rich, pitch-moving music.
Select the missing section plus its broken edges. A digital gap often creates clicks where the waveform stops and restarts; leaving those edges outside the repair can fill the silence while preserving the audible fault.
What counts as an audio dropout
A dropout is a brief section of missing or corrupted signal. It may look like an abrupt flat gap, a block of zeros, a discontinuity, or a patch of missing spectral energy. Loose cables, recorder or interface failures, buffer trouble, storage errors and damaged transfers can all produce a similar symptom.
Do not diagnose by the word “dropout” alone. Squared-off peaks suggest clipping; inspect individual waveform cycles and listen before choosing the RX De-clip workflow, because heavy limiting can also flatten peaks. One narrow impulse without missing program may be a click. A long absent sentence is not a short interpolation job; it needs an alternate take, edit, room-tone construction or an editorial decision.
The current RX 12 audio-problem reference describes gaps as short sections of missing or corrupted audio and points to Spectral Repair for replacement. For a recording that must stay synchronized, repair the gap in place. Deleting its duration would move everything that follows earlier; a shorter file is not a repaired performance.
Rule out a playback or edit problem first
Play the same range from the original recorder file and, if possible, another application. Bypass clip mute, gain automation, noise gates and plug-ins in the DAW. A buffer underrun during playback can sound like absent audio even though the samples on disk are intact; rendering a new guess over healthy samples would create a real defect.
Ableton’s playback troubleshooting guide identifies insufficient buffer time, heavy processing and faulty connections as possible dropout causes. Treat these as diagnostic leads, not a diagnosis from the sound alone.
Check whether the waveform is genuinely flat or discontinuous at the same location every time. If the failure moves between playbacks, investigate the audio device, storage path, driver or session load before opening a repair module. If it stays fixed and appears in the source file, preserve that source and work on a copy.
For multichannel material, audition channels separately. Check an intact microphone or safety track as a possible replacement source, with timing and phase aligned in the DAW. Do not copy one stereo channel blindly: its ambience, microphone perspective or musical content may differ. In RX, select only the channel that needs repair, then listen to the channels together for image shifts or a new seam.

This workflow uses the RX 12 Audio Editor in Standard or Advanced. Elements does not include these modules. Open the file in the editor and choose the module from its module list; an old tutorial showing an RX 4 Spectral Repair plug-in is not a guide to the current DAW insert list.
Nine steps to repair a short dropout
- Protect the source. Keep an untouched source copy and save an RX Document for editable work.
- Confirm missing audio. Rule out clipping, mute automation, a plug-in problem and a playback glitch.
- Inspect both views. Zoom into the waveform and spectrogram until the beginning and end of the defect are visible.
- Select the broken edges. Disable Instant Process, then select the gap and a small amount of intact audio on both edges; choose only damaged channels.
- Measure the selection. Switch the time format to Samples and check the upper-row selection length; use Interpolate only below 4,000 samples including edge padding.
- Choose a reconstruction model. For a gap needing Spectral Repair, compare Replace, Pattern or Partials + Noise against the surrounding signal and check the mode’s selection limit.
- Compare and render. Audition candidates from the same input with Compare Settings, render the chosen result and save the RX Document.
- Repair seams locally. Undo and adjust the boundary or make a careful local second pass when a transition remains audible.
- Approve in context. Listen before, through and after the repair; export to a new audio file and check its duration, channels and timing in the real mix.

Select the gap and its discontinuities
Turn Instant Process off before drawing the selection, so selecting does not immediately apply a repair. Use the Time selection tool [T] across the full bandwidth for a complete dropout. Zoom close enough to see where ordinary waveform motion ends and resumes. Include the silent or corrupted samples and a sliver on both sides to catch clicks at the interrupted waveform. Keep useful surrounding material outside the selection for Spectral Repair to analyze.
Do not make the selection broad for convenience. Every extra millisecond asks RX to invent more valid program. Start tight, audition, then widen only if the boundary itself remains damaged.

Use Interpolate for the smallest defects
The current RX 12 Interpolate manual defines the module for individual clicks shorter than 4,000 samples. It synthesizes a replacement for the selected defect; test it on a tiny gap with intact waveform context. Instant Process De-click also switches to Interpolate automatically for selections below that threshold, which is why it should be disabled while you are inspecting boundaries.
Four thousand samples is about 90.7 ms at 44.1 kHz, 83.3 ms at 48 kHz and 41.7 ms at 96 kHz. Those conversions describe the same sample limit; they are not promises that a complex 80 ms musical hole will sound transparent. Content matters as much as duration.
To measure the actual selection, right-click the time ruler, choose Samples, and read the upper-row selection length below the display. The RX time and frequency readouts distinguish the selection from the visible view in the lower row. Include your boundary padding in the count. At 48 kHz, a 960-sample selection is 20 ms; this is a calculation example, not a tested repair result.
Quality changes the interpolation order and therefore the complexity of the synthesized signal. Compare a few values on the same original selection; the highest number is not automatically the closest match. On a drum transient, consonant or pitched attack, listen for blurred timing even when the selection is within the sample limit.
Use Compare Settings to audition candidates from the same unprocessed input. Send a candidate with Compare, change one setting and send another, then select each result in the comparison window and use its Preview control. Render the chosen result when satisfied. A candidate audition is not a committed repair; save the RX Document after rendering. Do not assume every module offers a live Preview button.
Use Spectral Repair Replace for a short gap
Replace treats the selected content as badly damaged and rebuilds it from the surrounding region. It is a strong first choice for short gaps in steady ambience, sustained speech vowels or tonal material whose behavior continues predictably across the hole.
The current RX 12 Spectral Repair reference says more Bands improve frequency resolution but require a wider surrounding region; fewer bands suit short selections and transients. Multi-resolution improves low-frequency spectral resolution and high-frequency time resolution.
Surrounding Region Length controls how much neighboring material is analyzed. Inspect the dotted surrounding-region outline and keep it away from unrelated attacks or phrase changes. The three reconstruction tabs use horizontal context; the Horizontal, Vertical and 2D direction selector belongs to Attenuate. Attenuate adjusts existing energy and does not synthesize a missing full-band signal.
Use Before/After Weighting when one side is a better model. If a note attack occurs just before the gap and a stable sustain follows it, leaning on the wrong side can duplicate the transient or smear the sustain. Preview both directions rather than accepting a symmetrical default.
Use Pattern for repetition
Pattern searches the surrounding audio for a similar passage and uses it as replacement. It can outperform a simple connection when ambience, mechanical rhythm, tremolo or another recurring texture surrounds the dropout.
Pattern Search Range determines how far RX searches for a replacement; a five-second setting searches within five seconds before and after the selection. That is a search distance, not a five-second repair allowance. Include a genuine recurrence without reaching into a different phrase or acoustic state. A visually similar cycle can still be wrong if its phase, accent or background movement differs.
Pattern is not permission to fabricate a missing word. Speech meaning, consonant identity and timing are unique. For dialogue, a room-tone patch or alternate take is often more truthful than borrowing a nearby syllable that merely looks similar.
Use Partials + Noise for harmonic motion
Partials + Noise explicitly follows harmonic components across the missing area and reconstructs the residual non-harmonic material separately. RX 12 documentation says it can interpolate pitch modulation such as vibrato, which makes it useful for sustained voices and instruments when plain Replace joins the tone abruptly.
Harmonic Sensitivity controls how many partials are detected and connected. Lower values detect fewer harmonics; higher values can introduce unnatural pitch modulation. Compare candidates and inspect whether partial lines continue naturally through the repair, then trust the listening result over a tidy spectrogram.
This mode has a current documented four-second processing limit, as does Pattern. Replace and horizontal/2D Attenuate allow up to ten seconds, but those technical ceilings are not quality targets. A unique multi-second phrase may remain impossible to reconstruct convincingly.
The manual says longer selections can automatically change the processing mode. Recheck the active tab after resizing a selection. Split separate defects into separate repairs when useful; stretching one selection over healthy material only adds unnecessary reconstruction.
Repair a dropout in dialogue
For a missing few samples inside a vowel, Interpolate can reconnect the waveform. For a slightly longer stable vowel or room-tone hole, Spectral Repair Replace may preserve the surrounding texture. Keep consonant attacks and word boundaries out of the selection whenever possible.
If the gap removes the identity of a word, stop. Use another microphone, safety recorder, alternate take or an edit concealed with room tone. Restoration can bridge continuity; it cannot recover language that is no longer present.
After repair, listen with any dialogue denoise, EQ and compression that will actually be used. Compression may reveal a low-level seam, while aggressive denoise can make the synthesized area unnaturally clean.
Repair a dropout in music
Musical repair depends on what crosses the gap. A sustained pad may suit Replace. Repeating vibrato or tremolo may suit Pattern. A bowed or sung note with moving harmonics may suit Partials + Noise. A drum attack or plucked transient is less predictable and deserves a very tight selection.
Compare timing as well as tone. A spectrally plausible fill can still pull a groove late or soften an attack. Audition the repaired instrument soloed, then in the full mix where masking and rhythmic relationships change the judgment.

When a second pass helps
One pass may reconstruct the center while leaving a hard transition at an edge. Undo, alter the boundary by a few samples and compare before simply processing the same selection again. Repeated synthesis over the whole area can make the tone progressively less connected to the source.
iZotope’s 2014 dropout repair walkthrough demonstrates a Pattern repair on a changing orchestral chord, followed by Partials + Noise on the remaining harmonic transition. It uses RX 4; the local repair principle remains useful, while today’s controls and limits come from the RX 12 manual. A second pass should target the remaining fault, not automatically repeat the entire repair.
If a click remains after the gap is filled, diagnose it separately with the RX De-click workflow. Do not broaden the dropout repair across otherwise healthy audio just to catch one impulse.
Know when reconstruction will not work
- The gap removes a complete word, melody note or unique transient.
- The available context is too damaged or unrelated to support a convincing repair.
- The surrounding pitch, rhythm or ambience changes unpredictably.
- Repeated dropouts cover a large percentage of the recording.
- The repair introduces a new pitch, phase, rhythm or timbre error.
At that point, search backups, camera scratch audio, another microphone, a redundant recorder or another take. A transparent editorial replacement is better than an impressive-looking spectral patch that changes the event.
Final dropout quality gate
- The defect is genuinely missing or corrupted audio, not clipping or automation.
- The source is protected and the repair exists in an editable RX state.
- The selection includes damaged edges but not unnecessary program.
- Interpolate is used only below 4,000 samples.
- The Spectral Repair mode matches steady, repeating or harmonic content.
- The result preserves timing, pitch, ambience and channel continuity.
- Any second pass targets a remaining seam rather than the whole repair.
- The exported file has been auditioned in the real mix.
