# iZotope RX 12 Stems View: Edit Separated Audio

**iZotope RX 12 Stems View is the editing surface that appears after you run Stem Split from Music Rebalance, Dialogue Isolate or Scene Rebalance.** It places the separated components in aligned spectral lanes so you can select, solo, repair and export one component without processing the rest of the mix. It is not a fourth separation algorithm, and it does not make imperfect separation disappear.

Choose the split by source: Music Rebalance for vocals, bass, percussion and other instruments; Dialogue Isolate for speech, noise and reflections; Scene Rebalance for dialogue, music and effects in a finished scene. Then use the lightest local repair that solves the problem, listen to the recombined mix, and keep the original file untouched until delivery passes.

Scene Rebalance is Advanced-only, while the current Music Rebalance and Dialogue Isolate routes are available in Standard and Advanced. ## What Stems View actually does

A normal RX tab shows one mixed waveform and spectrogram. A split opens a dedicated tab whose name ends in **(Stems)**. The **Stem selector** in its header switches between an individual component and **All Stems**, which displays the lanes together. An individual stem can be edited like an ordinary RX audio file; returning to All Stems retains its edits.

The key benefit is selective processing. If hum is prominent in the bass estimate, De-hum can target that lane rather than the entire master. If a click landed in a vocal lane, a short spectral repair does not need to touch cymbals and synths. The separation module decides which sounds belong to each component. Stems View lets you inspect and modify those estimates. If a snare transient leaks into the vocal estimate, seeing it in another lane does not automatically reclassify it.

## Choose the right Stem Split source

**Music Rebalance** is the route for completed music. It identifies vocals, bass, percussion and other instruments. Use it when the request is to lower a singer, repair a bass resonance, extract material for a remix or inspect a master without the multitrack. **Dialogue Isolate** is the route for a spoken recording where voice, broadband noise and room reflections need different treatment. In Stems View, the noise and reflections are not just amount sliders: they become lanes that can be examined and processed. Use the [Dialogue Isolate workflow](https://izotoperx.net/izotope-rx-dialogue-isolate/) first when intelligibility and natural ambience are the main outcome.

**Scene Rebalance** is the post-production route for dialogue, music and effects baked into one scene. Its categories match editorial delivery better than Music Rebalance's song-oriented groups. iZotope's current [Scene Rebalance demonstration](https://www.izotope.com/community/blog/scene-rebalance?ref=izotoperx.net) shows level changes, separate export and even moving misclassified material between lanes. The module itself is limited to RX 12 Advanced.

## How to open Stems View in RX 12

1. Duplicate the source file or save a protected working copy.
2. Open the audio in the RX 12 standalone Audio Editor.
3. Choose Music Rebalance for music, Dialogue Isolate for speech, or Scene Rebalance in Advanced for a finished scene.
4. Select a representative difficult passage for a test split; select the full intended range when preparing the final stems.
5. Adjust Sensitivity and the available Quality setting. A module Preview can audition a rebalance, but its Gain settings will not carry into Stem Split.
6. Click the module’s **Stem Split** button, or open the top-right **Stem Split** pane and click **Process** in the chosen minimodule.
7. Inspect each stem, then select All Stems and activate every lane to check the combined playback.
8. Select the target stem in the tab header, make a local repair, then return to All Stems and audition every lane together.
9. Save a restorable RX Document and export either all stems or their sum using the appropriate File menu command. Reopen and check the complete delivery.

Both split the selected audio. The three source modules ignore their Gain slider positions during Stem Split and assume 0 dB: lowering a Noise or Music slider first does not bake that cut into the generated stems. Use the module’s **Render** button when you only want its level changes applied to one mixed output.

## Read the lanes before you touch them

Start with All Stems and every lane active. The view uses the **Composite view gain reduction** setting in **Preferences → Audio** for playback attenuation; the manual specifies 0 dB for matching the original tab’s level. Check that setting before mistaking quieter playback for lost audio. It is a monitoring setting, so verify actual exported levels separately. Then audition each lane for missing material and leakage.

Use the spectrogram as evidence, not decoration. A stable electrical line in the bass lane may point to hum. Short vertical stripes may be clicks or drum transients. Broadband clouds around speech may be room noise. Do not assume an empty-looking lane is useless. A faint residual can contain transients, reverberation or vocal effects that matter when all stems play together. Audition both solo and in context.

## Edit one stem without damaging the mix

For the clearest single-stem workflow, choose that stem in the tab header before making a time-frequency selection. Use Preview and Bypass where the repair module supports them, or Compare to audition candidates before rendering. Return to All Stems, activate all lanes, and play the repaired passage in context. A good solo result can still thin the mix if the edited component carries shared ambience.

Use event-specific tools. De-hum belongs on steady mains-related tones, De-click on short impulses, Spectral Repair on a localized shape, and Gain on a clean level adjustment. In All Stems, the lane selectors control **playback, selections and edits**, not listening alone. Click an active selector to leave only that lane active; clicking an inactive selector adds it to the active set. Double-click an active selector to restore every lane. Selecting a region in an inactive lane also activates it, so check for other active lanes before rendering. Command-click on Mac or Ctrl-click on Windows toggles one lane without changing the others; RX keeps at least one active.

**Compare, Clip Gain, Channel Sum and further Stem Split are unavailable in All Stems.** Choose an individual stem in the header to access those features. The Gain module is a different tool from the Clip Gain envelope. Also check the chosen module’s selection behavior: drawing a frequency boundary does not make every processor frequency-selective.

## Music workflow: vocals, bass, percussion and other

The current [Music Rebalance manual](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/music-rebalance.html?ref=izotoperx.net) names the four categories **Voice, Bass, Drums and Other**. Voice covers vocal material; Drums includes percussion. These estimates are not recovered session tracks. Bass overtones or drum attacks can land elsewhere, and Other groups material not assigned to the first three categories.

For a hum in the bass estimate, isolate a clean section, verify that the tone is stable and use a restrained De-hum pass. For one click in the vocal lane, select only the event and compare De-click with Spectral Repair. For a harsh cymbal moment in percussion, reduce the event locally rather than lowering the whole percussion stem.

iZotope’s [Music Rebalance demonstration](https://www.izotope.com/community/blog/stem-separation-music-rebalance?ref=izotoperx.net) shows untouched stems canceling against the original when summed and polarity-inverted. That is the vendor’s demonstration, not a listening test performed for this article. A successful null does not establish perfect classification: misplaced sound can still be present in another stem. Once you change a lane’s level or content, the sum is intentionally different.

Music Rebalance offers Good / Real-time, Better / Offline and Best / Offline quality modes, trading processing time for separation quality. Its Sensitivity settings are relative: raising every category to 100% does not improve separation. Increase one category only when listening shows that more of its subtle content needs to be captured, then check the extra leakage.

## Dialogue workflow: speech, noise and reflections

The [Dialogue Isolate manual](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/dialogue-isolate.html?ref=izotoperx.net) describes speech, noise and reverberation components, controlled by Voice, Noise and Reverb. Standard and Advanced can split them; the dedicated guide reserves the additional Quality and four-band controls for Advanced’s module and plug-in. Do not copy Music Rebalance’s Sensitivity logic here: increasing Dialogue Isolate Sensitivity classifies more signal as noise and reverb, potentially taking wanted speech with it.

iZotope's current [podcast and audiobook workflow](https://www.izotope.com/community/blog/fast-audio-cleanup?ref=izotoperx.net) suggests Gain on reflections, De-clip on the vocal component and De-hum on lingering interference. These are vendor workflow examples, not evidence that every distorted separated voice needs De-clip; inspect the untreated recording first. It also says the lanes are brought back together for export.

Listen for ambience holes. Noise and reflections are part of the acoustic scene, so aggressive attenuation can make edits pump or sound pasted together. Preserve the natural bed, and compare the final passage over headphones and speakers.

## Scene workflow: dialogue, music and effects

Scene Rebalance sorts a completed scene into dialogue, music and effects. That makes it the more direct choice when a licensed cue must be replaced, dialogue is buried under score, or an effects stem needs repair. It is not the same taxonomy as a song split.

After Stem Split, inspect whether a television voice, sung vocal or reverberant effect landed in the expected lane. The official Scene Rebalance example shows that regions can be moved between lanes when the model assigns them incorrectly. Make that correction before an export or large level change.

A finished composite may not yield a clean dialogue stem. When score, effects and speech share the same frequencies and timing, some residue can remain. The useful question is whether the separated and recombined scene meets the production need without distracting artifacts.

## Move audio between lanes carefully

Lane swapping can help when identifiable sound landed in the wrong category, but copying and moving are different operations. A copied event added to another stem remains in the source, so it can double in the sum. Keep a restorable state and note the exact selection start and duration before experimenting; if the event overlaps wanted material, leaving some spill may be the better edit.

The [RX Edit menu reference](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/application-menus.html?ref=izotoperx.net#edit-menu) distinguishes **Paste Special → Mix**, which combines clipboard audio with the destination, from **Replace**, which overwrites it, and **Insert**, which shifts existing audio. Work in the destination’s individual-stem view at the original position. Adding a copy is only the first half of a transfer: remove only the matching source content without closing time, then check the sum. Do not use a time-selection Delete for that removal; it closes the gap. Delete on a time-frequency selection instead silences the selected area. Test on a protected copy and undo both sides if timing, boundaries or the combined sound change unexpectedly.

Use History before and after the move. If the recombined result gets worse, restore the prior state rather than trying to repair the repair.

For a localized problem, [Spectral Repair](https://izotoperx.net/izotope-rx-spectral-repair/) is often the most controlled second step because the selection can exclude the rest of the lane. ## Prevent stem-separation artifacts

Artifacts often sound like warbling, hollow transients, phasey reverberation or traces of one source inside another. They become more obvious when a lane is soloed or boosted. Gentle moves generally hide them better than total isolation.

- Test the most crowded chorus or scene, not only an easy intro.
- Prefer a small gain change to muting a lane outright.
- Avoid stacking several aggressive ML processes on the same region.
- Repair short events locally instead of denoising an entire stem.
- Judge the recombined mix at matched loudness.
- Check transients, reverb tails and stereo image after every large edit.
- Keep the untouched source available for restoration.

A [May 2026 RX 12 user report on Steinberg’s forum](https://forums.steinberg.net/t/comparing-slpro-12-0-30-to-rx-12-standard-stem-capture/1032998?ref=izotoperx.net) describes bass overtones appearing in Other while the main bass stem remained useful. That is one source-specific observation, not a product ranking. For your recording, check where the wanted harmonics landed before processing a lane based only on its name.

## Stems View vs the real-time plug-ins

Use Music Rebalance or Dialogue Isolate in a supported DAW plug-in format when the job is an adjustable rebalance during playback. Check the actual host and format before planning automation; the standalone Stems View is not embedded in that insert. Scene Rebalance’s plug-in version is AudioSuite-only, not a real-time DAW insert.

Use Stems View in the standalone editor when you need to inspect components, repair a local event or deliver separated files. A small vocal level change may need only the source module’s controls; a click inside that vocal component may justify splitting it for a local repair.

## Export individual stems or one recombined file

Choose the tab’s view before exporting. With an individual stem selected, **File → Export…** writes that stem; **Export Selection…** writes only its selected region. In **All Stems**, **File → Export…** writes separate stem files, while **File → Export as Single File…** writes their sum. Restore all lanes for the listening check and verify the exported set instead of assuming a solo state defines the delivery.

Before export, confirm sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, names and the complete intended duration. Keep the same start and end boundaries, including leading silence, across every delivered stem. Do not normalize them independently when they must reconstruct the approved balance. Check sample peaks in each stem as well as the sum; cancellation in a mix can hide a higher individual peak. For integer PCM delivery, leave headroom and apply a common attenuation to the set if necessary. Also check true peaks against the receiving specification. A short export is a preliminary test. Reopen the complete final delivery, listen through the recombined file and every supplied stem, and verify alignment in the destination session with no time stretching or independent trims. Use **File → Save RX Document…** to archive edits separately; .rxdoc is an RX working document, not the audio file to hand to another DAW. Stems View is a workflow introduced with RX 12\. If the application identifies itself as RX 11 or earlier, an old interface is expected.
