- Description: Choose AU, VST3 or AAX for the host, AudioSuite for offline Pro Tools processing, and ARA only for a supported Spectral Editor integration.

RX 12 installs AU on macOS, VST3 on macOS and Windows, and AAX/AAX AudioSuite for Pro Tools; all listed formats are 64-bit only. ARA is different: it is a deeper clip-level integration used by RX Spectral Editor in specifically supported hosts, not a universal replacement for AU, VST3 or AAX inserts.

Choose the format your DAW actually loads, then check the RX plug-in comparison for the individual module. A module can exist in the standalone Audio Editor without being available as a real-time plug-in, and some Advanced tools are AudioSuite-only.

## RX 12 format map at a glance

| Format | Host, use and limitation |
| -------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| AU | macOS hosts, especially Logic Pro. Normal real-time/offline host plug-in. Mac only; module must ship as an AU. |
| VST3 | Compatible macOS and Windows DAWs. Normal real-time/offline host plug-in. Host support does not guarantee every RX module. |
| AAX | Pro Tools. Real-time insert. Distinct from AudioSuite processing. |
| AAX AudioSuite | Pro Tools clip processing. Offline rendered edit. Some Advanced modules are available only here. |
| AU ARA | Supported Logic Pro Spectral Editor workflow. Deep clip/timeline access. Current Apple-silicon support requires Logic in Rosetta. |
| VST3 ARA | Supported Studio One/Fender Studio Pro workflow. Event-level spectral editing. Only the named supported hosts qualify. |
| AAX ARA | Supported Pro Tools integrated editor. Docked ARA clip editing. Avid supplies its RX Spectral Editor integration. |

The current [RX 12 Standard page](https://www.izotope.com/products/rx-standard?ref=izotoperx.net) lists AU, AAX, AAX AudioSuite, VST3, AU ARA and VST3 ARA, with host-specific notes. The format list is a starting point—not proof that the plug-in you want exists in that format.

## Eight steps to choose the correct RX plug-in

1. **Name the host.** Confirm the exact DAW and version rather than searching by operating system alone.
2. **Name the job.** Decide whether audio must play through an insert, render offline or open in a spectral clip editor.
3. **Choose the host format.** Use AU or VST3 in a compatible host, or the appropriate AAX component in Pro Tools.
4. **Separate AAX from AudioSuite.** Choose an available insert for playback or AudioSuite for offline clip rendering; some plug-ins have only one of these routes.
5. **Verify the module.** Check both the RX 12 plug-in comparison and the licensed edition; Editor modules and DAW plug-ins are different lists.
6. **Verify ARA requirements.** Match Spectral Editor to the supported host, version, architecture and clip-extension entry point.
7. **Install and rescan.** Use the installer’s available format choices for the required components, then rescan the correct DAW category.
8. **Test independent audio.** Preserve the original and test a separate audio copy. Check playback, render and Undo before saving, then reopen to verify edit recall; ARA Undo history does not survive a session save.

## AU: the native Mac route

Audio Units are the normal RX choice in Logic Pro and other Mac hosts that prefer AU. Use the ordinary AU version when the module should behave as an insert or host-rendered effect. Do not pick the ARA-labeled Spectral Editor merely because it appears beside standard Audio Units.

AU availability still depends on the individual RX plug-in. The current comparison lists common repair tools such as De-click, De-clip, De-hum, De-reverb and Voice De-noise across editions, while other modules begin in Standard or Advanced.

The [RX and Logic Pro workflow](https://izotoperx.net/izotope-rx-logic-pro/) covers plug-in validation, external-editor routing and the current Rosetta limitation for Spectral Editor ARA.

## VST3: the broad native-host format

VST3 is the usual RX format for compatible Windows hosts and many cross-platform DAWs. Current iZotope compatibility names Ableton Live 12, Cubase 15, Nuendo 15, Studio One 7, Reaper 7, FL Studio 25, Adobe Audition 2026, Adobe Premiere Pro 2026, DaVinci Resolve 19 and Reason 13, alongside the separately listed Mac and Pro Tools hosts.

That list was checked on September 7, 2026 against the [RX 12 Standard release notes](https://www.izotope.com/pages/release-notes/rx-standard?ref=izotoperx.net). A newer or older host may work, but absence from the confirmed list does not establish incompatibility. The list covers the plug-in suite; it does not promise Spectral Editor ARA in every named DAW.

VST3 ARA is a separate Spectral Editor integration. In a supported Studio One-family host it runs as an event-level extension; it is not the standard VST3 insert that every VST3 host can load.

## AAX versus AAX AudioSuite

AAX is Pro Tools' plug-in format. A normal AAX insert processes playback through the mixer. AAX AudioSuite analyzes and renders selected clips or files offline, creating or replacing media according to Pro Tools processing choices.

That distinction matters for restoration. A real-time De-hum or Voice De-noise insert stays adjustable during playback. An AudioSuite repair becomes a committed clip-based result that can be conformed, copied or returned without keeping an active insert.

Ambience Match, De-rustle and Scene Rebalance are marked AAX AudioSuite-only in current [RX 12 Advanced release notes](https://www.izotope.com/pages/release-notes/rx-advanced?ref=izotoperx.net). Looking for them in the real-time insert list will fail even when installation and authorization are correct.

## ARA is an extension, not another ordinary insert

ARA lets a compatible plug-in exchange richer timeline and clip information with the host. RX uses it for Spectral Editor so selections and spectral repairs can happen against host audio without a traditional send-and-return for every change.

The current [RX 12 Spectral Editor reference](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/rx-spectral-editor.html?ref=izotoperx.net) describes ARA 2.0 integration and warns that host actions can commit edits to new media. Treat the ARA editor as a clip workflow with its own render and session-recall behavior, not simply a colorful analyzer insert.

ARA support is exact. A DAW may support ARA generally but still not support RX Spectral Editor's particular build, format or version. Verify the named RX/host pair before diagnosing the plug-in as missing.

Spectral Editor exposes five processing modes: Attenuate, Replace, Gain, De-click and De-hum. It is not the full standalone editor or the complete Spectral Repair module. Missing Pattern or Partials + Noise controls are therefore not evidence of a failed plug-in scan.

## RX Spectral Editor in Logic Pro

iZotope currently supports Spectral Editor AU ARA in Logic Pro 10.7 or later on Intel Macs and on Apple-silicon Macs only when Logic runs through Rosetta. The broader current compatibility list names Logic Pro 12, but the ARA note retains the 10.7+ minimum and Rosetta qualification.

That means standard RX AU inserts can be available in native Apple-silicon Logic while Spectral Editor ARA still requires a different launch mode. If ordinary RX plug-ins appear but the spectral editor does not work, compare the exact variant and architecture before reinstalling everything.

In Logic, put Spectral Editor in the **first insert slot of an audio track**, select the region and start playback to load its audio. A bus or instrument insert is not this workflow. Save a new project version before changing architecture. Use independently copied audio for a repair test, then reopen the session to check that the edit returns.

## RX Spectral Editor in Studio One and Fender Studio Pro

Current iZotope material lists Spectral Editor VST3 ARA for Studio One 7 and Studio Pro 8/Fender Studio Pro 8\. The RX 12 guide says the VST3 ARA version operates directly on a Studio One clip as Event FX.

The detailed workflow chapter still describes Studio One 6.0+ and some menus introduced in 6.5; the current RX 12 confirmed-host note names 7 and 8\. Treat the former as historical workflow detail, not proof that every older host is currently tested. For the current route, select an event and use **Event FX > RX 12 Spectral Editor**, rather than a channel insert.

The same guide warns that Studio One on macOS may display an AU version of Spectral Editor ARA even though that route is unsupported. Seeing a plug-in name in a menu is not sufficient evidence that the selected format-host combination is valid.

Copies of the same source clip can share ARA edits. In Studio One, the manual gives **Audio > Audio Parts > New Clip Version** to separate their edit versions. For a portable safety test, work from a separate audio file and retain the untouched source; simply duplicating an event is not a backup.

Compatibility listings need a practical check. A [user report on the Native Instruments community](https://community.native-instruments.com/discussion/50722/is-rx-spectral-editor-ara-supported-in-windows?ref=izotoperx.net) describes RX 11 Standard failing in Fender Studio Pro 8 on Windows 10, and relays support’s explanation of a rebranding-related bug. Another commenter reports success on Mac. These are user reports, not a confirmed RX 12 fix notice. The RX 12 release notes checked on September 7 still list version 12.0.0 and do not establish a fix for that report. If the supported VST3 Event FX route says the host is unavailable, record both exact builds and check with support before relying on it for a project.

## RX Spectral Editor in Pro Tools

The [Avid compatibility table](https://kb.avid.com/pkb/articles/en%5FUS/Knowledge/Pro-Tools-ARA-2-Supported-Plugins?ref=izotoperx.net) lists RX Spectral Editor 11.1 and later with Pro Tools 2024.6 and later, and includes it with paid Pro Tools versions. That entitlement is the integrated Spectral Editor, not the full RX 12 Standard or Advanced suite. Use Avid’s supplied component for this route; do not assume an RX 12 purchase or a generic AAX scan proves it is installed.

Use AAX inserts for real-time RX processing, AudioSuite for offline clip repair, and the integrated ARA editor for spectral clip work. Those three routes can coexist in one Pro Tools installation without being duplicates.

For clip editing, select the clip and use **RX Spectral Editor > Edit** from its menu. The track-level route uses the Elastic Audio/ARA selector. The RX manual warns that newly added clips and AudioSuite-processed clips may need the extension enabled manually. Rendering a clip commits edits to new media; AudioSuite processing after ARA also commits the ARA edits.

The [RX Connect and Pro Tools guide](https://izotoperx.net/izotope-rx-connect-pro-tools/) covers the fourth route: sending material to the standalone Audio Editor when its full toolset or monitoring path is preferable.

## Module availability matters more than the installer checkbox

The current [RX 12 plug-in comparison](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/rx-overview.html?ref=izotoperx.net) separates Editor modules from DAW plug-ins. Elements supplies six plug-ins and no standalone Audio Editor. Standard and Advanced include the editor and additional plug-ins such as Breath Control, De-crackle, De-ess, De-plosive, Dialogue Isolate, Guitar De-noise, Mouth De-click and Spectral De-noise. RX 12 also lists new De-bleed and Music Rebalance plug-ins; advice that these are unavailable as conventional plug-ins may describe an older release.

Repair Assistant has its own format note: AAX AudioSuite, AU and VST3, without an ordinary AAX insert. The Advanced plug-ins Scene Rebalance, Ambience Match and De-rustle are AudioSuite-only. Interpolate, Phase and the full Spectral Repair module appear in the Editor-module table, not the DAW plug-in table. Buying a higher edition or rescanning cannot create an unsupported format.

Before troubleshooting, separate four questions: is the module in the license, does it ship as a plug-in, does it ship in this format, and does the host load that format?

## Real-time insert, offline render, ARA or standalone Editor

| Need | Best starting route |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------- |
| Adjust noise repair during mix playback | AU, VST3 or AAX insert |
| Process selected Pro Tools clips offline | AAX AudioSuite |
| Edit host clips in a supported spectral view | Spectral Editor ARA |
| Use the full RX Editor, selection tools and History | Standalone Audio Editor or RX Connect |

For detailed routing and monitoring, use the [RX Editor, plug-in and Connect workflow comparison](https://izotoperx.net/rx-editor-plugins-connect-workflow/). Choose the compatible format here, then follow the route that returns repaired audio to your session.

## Why ARA can fail when normal RX plug-ins work

A working AU, VST3 or AAX insert shows that this particular component loads. It does not prove another module’s license, ARA installation, clip-level entry point or architecture is correct. Check the failing component itself instead of treating one working plug-in as a test of the entire suite.

| Symptom | Meaning and next check |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| All ordinary RX plug-ins are absent | Install, scan, license or host-format problem. Edition, installed component and DAW scan path. |
| Ordinary RX plug-ins work; Spectral Editor is absent | ARA route or edition problem. Supported host version, license tier and extension menu. |
| Spectral Editor opens but sees no clip | Wrong insertion method or unanalysed event. Host's ARA/Event FX/extension workflow. |
| Logic shows standard AU but ARA fails | Architecture mismatch is plausible. Current Rosetta requirement on Apple silicon. |
| Studio One shows an AU ARA choice | A visible but unsupported variant. Use the documented VST3 ARA Event FX route. |

Change one variable at a time. Launching a different architecture, moving plug-in files, clearing caches and reinstalling simultaneously can produce a working result without revealing the cause—and can break other sessions. Record the original state, test a new empty project, then apply the proven change to production.

## Install fewer formats, document the choice

If one workstation uses only Logic, the AU components may be sufficient. Windows Cubase or Reaper normally needs VST3; Pro Tools uses AAX components with the insert or AudioSuite processing supplied by that particular plug-in. Where the installer offers format choices, select what your hosts need. AudioSuite is not necessarily a separate installer checkbox, and deleting formats used by existing sessions can prevent recall.

For shared facilities, record the RX edition and version, installed formats, host version and Apple-silicon launch mode. Save a small compatibility session with independent test audio and representative processing. Check playback and render, then close and reopen it to check edit recall. **ARA Undo history is cleared when the session is saved**: test Undo before saving and do not mistake recalled edits for preserved Undo history. Keep an untouched source outside the test.

There is also a direction-of-use distinction. RX 12 does not list VST2 among its supplied DAW formats, but the [standalone editor’s Plug-in Hosting module](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/plug-in-hosting.html?ref=izotoperx.net) can load third-party VST2 and VST3 on Windows, or AU, VST2 and VST3 on Intel Macs and under Rosetta. Native Apple-silicon RX hosts AU and VST3\. Hosting an older VST2 effect inside RX does not make RX itself a VST2 plug-in.

## When an RX plug-in does not appear

1. Confirm the module is included in the licensed edition.
2. Confirm it exists as a plug-in rather than only an Editor module.
3. Match AU, VST3, AAX, AudioSuite or ARA to the host and job.
4. Verify the DAW and OS version against current iZotope compatibility.
5. On Mac, distinguish native Apple silicon, Rosetta and Intel requirements.
6. Rescan the expected format and check the correct host category.
7. Test in a new empty session before blaming the production project.

Follow the [RX plug-ins-not-showing checklist](https://izotoperx.net/izotope-rx-plugins-not-showing/) for component installation, scan paths and validation after confirming the module and format exist.

## Final compatibility gate

- The exact DAW, version, operating system and architecture are recorded.
- The chosen format matches the host.
- The required module exists in the licensed RX edition.
- The module actually ships in the selected plug-in format.
- AAX insert and AudioSuite processing have not been confused.
- ARA is opened through the host's supported clip-extension path.
- Independent test audio passes playback and render; the saved session recalls its edits. ARA Undo was checked before saving.
- The original media remains recoverable.

The [Fix iZotope RX hub](https://izotoperx.net/fix-izotope-rx/) connects format checks to scan failures, authorization, crashes, cropped windows and broken Connect transfers.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which plug-in formats does RX 12 support?

iZotope lists AU, VST3, AAX, AAX AudioSuite, AU ARA and VST3 ARA. All current formats are 64-bit only, and individual modules have narrower availability.

### Should I install AU or VST3 on a Mac?

Use the format your host officially supports. Logic normally uses AU; many cross-platform Mac DAWs use VST3\. Installing both does not make an unsupported module appear.

### What is the difference between AAX and AudioSuite?

AAX inserts process playback in Pro Tools. AudioSuite analyzes and renders selected clips offline. Some RX Advanced plug-ins are AudioSuite-only.

### Is ARA a normal real-time plug-in?

No. ARA is a data-exchange extension that gives Spectral Editor deeper access to supported host clips and timeline context.

### Does RX Spectral Editor ARA work natively in Apple-silicon Logic?

Not according to current iZotope requirements. On Apple-silicon Macs, Logic must run in Rosetta for the supported AU ARA Spectral Editor route.

### Which Studio One version supports RX 12 Spectral Editor ARA?

Current iZotope material lists Studio One 7 and Studio Pro/Fender Studio Pro 8 for VST3 ARA. Use Event FX and test the exact builds; a supported-host listing does not resolve every reported integration bug.

### Does Pro Tools support RX Spectral Editor ARA?

Yes. Avid lists RX Spectral Editor 11.1 and later with Pro Tools 2024.6 and later, with the integrated editor included in paid Pro Tools versions. That does not include the full RX suite.

### Why is a module in RX Editor but not in my DAW?

Editor-module availability and plug-in availability are different. Check the RX 12 plug-in comparison, edition, format and host route before reinstalling.
